What is TMJ/TMD?
The term "TMJ" comes from ‘temporomandibular joint,’ more commonly referred to as the 'jaw joint.' The temporomandibular joint assists in the basic opening and closing movements of the jaw. The term is used in a general sense for conditions associated with dysfunctions of the head and neck since the TMJ was usually the cause of these conditions. However, many of these problems may not be connected to the temporomandibular joint. Therefore, most dentists now use the term 'TMD' (temporomandibular disorder) to describe these types of conditions.
